The Level 2 NVQ in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations is designed for individuals working in the construction and civil engineering industries who want to demonstrate their practical skills, knowledge and occupational competence through a nationally recognised qualification.

This workplace-based qualification is suitable for construction operatives and civil engineering workers who carry out practical tasks on construction sites, infrastructure projects and other civil engineering works. It recognises the skills you use in your job and helps demonstrate that you can work safely, productively and to the required industry standards.

Assessment is based on your experience and the work you carry out. You will build a portfolio of workplace evidence and demonstrate your competence to a qualified assessor. Depending on your chosen pathway, the qualification may cover activities such as preparing work areas, using tools and equipment, laying paving, installing kerbs and channels, carrying out drainage work, concreting or undertaking excavation and reinstatement activities.

The exact units and practical activities you need to demonstrate will depend on your chosen occupational pathway and the awarding organisation.

Duration

The time required to complete this NVQ depends on your existing experience, your chosen pathway, the range of work available to demonstrate your competence and assessor availability. Experienced workers may be able to complete their assessment within a few weeks to a few months, provided they can supply the required workplace evidence.

Achieving this NVQ demonstrates your practical competence in your chosen area of construction or civil engineering operations. It can help strengthen your CV, support applications for relevant construction roles and provide formal recognition of the skills you have developed through working on site.

Funding

• Up to £600 grant: CITB’s standard achievement grant for eligible short qualifications achieved from January 2026 is £600.

  

• Who can claim? The grant is generally claimed by a CITB-registered employer that is up to date with its Levy Returns, subject to the scheme rules.

• Training costs: The grant is not automatically paid to the learner or deducted from the course price. Ask whether other funding or employer support is available.

 

Employment

To complete this NVQ, you must be employed in a relevant role or have suitable Construction and Civil Engineering Operations work organised so that you can demonstrate your competence and collect the necessary workplace evidence.

You must have access to appropriate work activities that match your chosen pathway and the requirements of the qualification.

CSCS Card

Successful completion of an eligible Level 2 NVQ may allow you to apply for a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card, subject to meeting the current CSCS qualification requirements and passing the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

The exact qualification must be recognised by CSCS for the occupation you intend to work in.
